PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS

These directions will help you prepare for oral surgery. Read them carefully, and if there is anything you do not understand, ask your doctor to explain.

  • NO EATING OR DRINKING 8 HOURS PRIOR TO SURGERY. Arrive for your surgery with an empty stomach. Do not eat or drink anything (including water) for eight hours before the surgery.

  • If you have food prior to surgery, the stomach produces acids to digest the food and when you’re under anesthesia your body loses some of its reflexes like gag and coughing reflexes. So your stomach acids could come up from stomach and go down to your lungs - you can’t protect your lungs from the acid because you lost those reflexes, that could burn your lungs and you won’t be able to get the oxygen you need and could wind up with a life threatening condition called aspiration pneumonia.

  • You should not smoke the morning of the procedure because this could cause severe breathing complications. If you take prescribed medication for a heart condition, high blood pressure, infection or other illness, take the medication as scheduled, but take it with a small sip of water.

  • Wear short sleeves shirt and comfortable clothing (Females: NO DRESSES). On the day of your surgery, you must wear a sleeveless, short sleeve, or loose sleeve shirt.

  • Come to the office with a friend or family member who is an adult. Your friend should wait for you at the office, take you home after the surgery, and stay with you for 3 hours. You will not be able to leave the office alone or drive yourself home.

  • We cannot and will not start the surgery, if your driver is NOT PRESENT, and your belongings must be with the driver.

  • Driver MUST REMAIN in the centre during the entire procedure.

  • We may ask you to arrive early for your appointment to take care of necessary paperwork.

  • Remove nail polish/acrylic/gel nails on the Left and Right Index Finger.

  • Please remove all facial piercings, including removal from the nose, lips, tongue and ears. In addition, do not bring any jewelry, cash or valuables to your surgical appointment.

  • No Contact lenses.

  • DO NOT operate a motor vehicle, any heavy machinery or make any major life decisions for 24 hours after the surgery.

  • DO NOT USE ILLICIT DRUGS, including MARIJUANA 72 Hours prior to surgery.

  • We will cancel your surgery on the day it is scheduled if: A.) You had anything to eat or drink for the last eight hours. B.) You have not taken medications as directed. C.) You have not brought an adult with you who can stay with you and take you home. D.) You smoked marijuana in the last 72 hours or have used any illicit drugs.
